Looking for a new blog design

June 26, 2008

I like my current blog design, but it’s just getting kind of old. It took me a while to settle on this current theme, and I do like it. I just need a change i guess.

Lately I’ve been thinking about moving the blog to a hosted WordPress install and actually getting a domain name for it. I don’t know if OddBoot.com is taken or not. Heck, I might even end up changing the name. OddBoot is just something I came up with off the top of my head one day.

At this point who knows. All I know is that I need a change. Something to stir my creativity. I’m really considering making my own design at this point. I’ve always wanted to come up with my own personal theme, but I’m just not that good with Photoshop and CSS and all the other stuff. I can handle the server part, not a problem there. My lack of skill in the artistic parts of theme design is what is currently holding me back.

Maybe I’ll just give a try, who knows.

I was doing a little research this morning and came across this wonderful article about the Linux file system. What I found most useful is the graphic display of the Linux file system.

GnuWin32: open source tools ported to Windows

June 24, 2008

Ever wanted to run some of those powerful Linux tools on Windows? Wouldn’t it be great to quickly pick a line out of a huge file with grep? GnuWin32 provides ports of these powerful tools that install quickly and easily on Windows. GnuWin32 offers these ports as one package, or you can download and install each tool individually.

I stumbled across these ports yesterday while I was looking for a way to use a grep like tool in a Windows script. It was just this morning that I found that the same project offers ports of other great GNU tools.

Trying out MarsEdit

June 20, 2008

I’ve been looking around for an external application that would allow me to post to my blog without having to open a web browser and use WordPress’s WYSIWYG editor. I’ve never been a huge fan of WYSIWYG editors. They always seem to cause a bit of frustration for me.

I did some searching around and found an OS X application called MarsEdit. So far I’m liking it. I’ll have to do some more post to play around with its features. Sadly, MarsEdit isn’t free, but it might be worth purchasing.

Firefox 3 optimized builds for G5 / Intel

June 20, 2008

Now that Firefox 3 has finally been released, optimized builds are starting to popup. These builds run smoother, and seem to be a lot more stable. There is also a G4 version coming soon.

Firefox 3 Launch Day

June 17, 2008

It’s finally Firefox download day. Firefox 3 was set to launch at 10am PDT, but it seems that the Mozilla web site has gone down under the strain from everyone hitting the site. I would guess it won’t take too long before Mozilla has the site back up and running, but it’s an hour and 15 minutes after 10am PDT.

At first the site was being slow about coming up, but is now giving an HTTP unavailable message.

2:55 PM EST: Finally got it downloaded. Seems to be running well. From what I can see, the final release has the same build number as the RC 3 release.

2:49 PM EST: Looks like it’s up now. The download link has been changed to version 3. I’m downloading it now.

2:42 PM EST: This is suppose to be the download counter: http://downloadcounter.sj.mozilla.com/

2:35 PM EST: Looks like the site is slowly coming back up. The main page has changed, but the links are still point to Firefox 2. I just checked my email and the email from Mozilla has arrived. So the actual download day may just be starting a little later than planned.

2:30 PM EST: Finally a new page has come up. There is a Firefox 3 logo on the screen, but the download links still point to 2.0.0.14.

2:28 PM EST: I refreshed the page and got a blue bar across the top this time.

2:16 PM EST: From what I’m hearing, the RC3 release of Firefox 3 is identical to the final release of Firefox 3. I’m not 100% sure this is true, and I won’t really know for sure until I can download it directly from Mozilla.

2:15 PM EST: The site now seems to be coming up, but it is still displaying the Firefox 2 download link.
